ID, MT want to hunt endangered wolves

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – Idaho and Montana officials are seeking legal grounds to revive gray wolf hunts in the Northern Rockies, and planned to meet Tuesday with environmentalists whose lawsuit restored the animal’s endangered status.      The states hosted their first managed wolf hunts last year after the species rebounded from near-extermination last century.      This year’s hunts are likely blocked by an Aug. 6 U.S. District Court ruling. But state officials say they will ask the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for permission to hold future hunts to curb wolf attacks on livestock.      They point to the legal harvest of other protected species such as salmon and bull trout as a precedent.      Environmental groups have vowed to stop attempts to circumvent the federal court ruling. … Read entire article »

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) – Weekend rain has helped calm wildfires burning around Jackson Hole.      Firefighters were able to contain a fire burning on 22 square miles of sagebrush at the Idaho National Laboratory on Sunday, two days after it started. Smoke from it and other Idaho fires sent so much smoke into the valley that it was detected by smoke alarms.      Fire managers say the rain and cooler weather also helped them turn management of the 4,255-acre fire east of Hoback Junction back to the U.S. Forest Service.      A weather station in Jackson Hole recorded 0.77 inches of precipitation between Saturday and Sunday mornings.      —      Information from: Jackson Hole News And Guide, http://www.jhnewsandguide.com … Read entire article »
